What Path to Publication is
A nine-month guided program that takes your novel from first pages to query-ready — with a team around you the whole way, and the option to keep going for as long as the book needs.
You write. You submit up to 12,500 words a month. You meet your Advisor, your pod, and the wider community on a steady rhythm so you’re never more than a week away from live support. Craft courses, mindfulness practice, author-platform build-out, and query coaching arrive at the moment in the journey when you actually need them.
Your support team
Your Advisor
Experienced in your genre. Reads your pages within two weeks, meets you monthly for an hour during Draft 1, and gives a full set of notes on each completed draft.
Accountability buddy
A real person, not a bot. John texts you every weekday morning to check in on the plan. Tell him early if you’re stuck — that’s how we catch a stall before it becomes a month.
Your pod leader
Runs your 90-minute Mindset Pod with four or five other writers. Confidential, and recorded for pod members only.
Meeting leaders
Trained mindfulness instructors and working writers who lead the daily Meditate & Write sessions at 9:30am PT.
April Dávila
Leads the weekly community Q&A and shows up at Meditate & Write about half the time. Bring the questions you don’t want to sit on for a month.
Platform & query experts
Matched to you later in the program, when you start building your author platform and preparing query materials.
The roadmap
The road ahead
Six stages over nine months. Tap any stop on the map to see what happens there, what you do, and what we do.
Before day one
- Enroll & sign. Payment, then your agreement arrives for e-signature.
- Two forms. The onboarding form and the text opt-in so John can check in.
- Access lands. Field Guide, the Mindful Writing Community, and P2P Meet & Connect.
- Advisor assigned. Matched to your genre, then your first meeting gets booked.
- Submit first pages. This is Day One — your start date is the day you send pages.
Finish your first draft
Attend the daily mindful writing sessions, check in with your accountability buddy every morning, and bring questions to the weekly Q&A. Submit pages every month for personal feedback, and meet your pod. The Savvy Fiction Writer’s Field Guide runs as a five-week intensive right at the start — one module a week.
Submit up to 12,500 words (about 50 pages) at aprildavila.com/p2p-pages, at least two weeks before your meeting. Reminders come 18, 14 and 13 days out — 13 days is the final cutoff, and past it you’ll be asked to reschedule. Word documents only.
Your Advisor reads within two weeks and edits in Track Changes, looking at language, voice, pacing, tension, clarity, dialogue and show-versus-tell. You go through it together on a one-hour Zoom, then the marked-up document and a written summary come by email.
Keep moving forward. Revision has its own stage, and starting early is the most common way writers lose momentum. Feedback isn’t sent ahead of the call for exactly that reason.
Build your author platform
After five months an email unlocks the Author Platform questionnaire, and you start building an audience before the book is even done. You don’t need a finished manuscript — in fact starting now is the point.
Fill in the questionnaire, then book your one-hour kickoff call. Bring anything technical to Author Platform Tech Office Hours, the first and third Tuesday of each month.
We set you up with a simple, elegant author website, one social account, a newsletter list and template, and a reader freebie that grows the list. Already have these? We sharpen what’s there instead. The site gets built for you and delivered with a walkthrough video.
Revise
With fresh eyes, and the full support of your team, revise your manuscript into a solid second draft. First, though: the break. Print the draft, put it in a drawer, and step back for 30 days. Writers who keep tinkering have a measurably harder time with everything that follows.
Watch Mindful Editing, then read your draft straight through and mark what you want to change — notes only, no editing yet. Then work through your Advisor’s notes alongside your own.
You stay with the same Advisor and meet 30 minutes every two weeks — no pages to submit, just support, questions, and a pep talk when you need one. Daily texts start back up.
Tell John or your Advisor. Once your final Draft 1 meeting has happened it’s official: a congratulatory gift goes in the mail and your daily texts pause for the month you’re resting. You do not submit the full manuscript at this point — only your monthly pages.
Prep your query
After eight months in the program, Pitch Perfect Query Bootcamp unlocks so that when the time comes, you’re ready. It covers the query letter, how to find the right agents, and the synopsis.
Work through the course, draft your letter, hook and synopsis, then book the first of your three 1-hour live support calls to sharpen them. Bring anything else to Query Expert Office Hours on the first Tuesday of the month.
Not everyone is ready at month 8, and that’s fine. Course access is yours for life; the three live hours can be used any time within 21 months of your start date — the nine months of the program plus a full extra year.
Work on revisions
When Draft 2 is done you’re introduced to a new Advisor who reads the whole book with fresh eyes. Then you meet every two weeks while you complete your revisions.
Reply to the introduction email with your full manuscript attached — Word, 12pt, double spaced. This is the first time you send the complete book.
Your new Advisor takes about a month, then sends back the manuscript with Track Changes plus a separate compiled notes document, and books an hour to walk you through it — always at least two weeks after the edits land, so you have time to read.
The pattern repeats. Every completed draft gets a new reader, a full set of notes, and a fresh round of every-other-week support.
Query with confidence
Send off your query letter knowing you have a great story to tell and a budding audience eager to buy your work once it’s published. That’s the whole point of building the platform early.
Most writers do, and it’s planned for. The Next Step Collective continues everything month to month for as long as you like: daily texts, daily writing sessions, weekly Q&A, monthly pods, twice-monthly Advisor meetings, and a full manuscript review whenever you finish a draft. Alumni only.
Finish a draft before month 9 and the notes plus meeting are included. Not ready at month 9? Join the Collective and continue seamlessly. Leave and come back later and there’s a six-month wait before submitting a draft for full notes. Either way you keep the course material and every future update.
The rhythm
Your week, your month
Most writers pick two to four live sessions a week and build a routine around them. You don’t have to come to everything.
